Where is the oldest Fourth of July parade in the U.S.?
Bristol, RI! The parade started back in 1785 when it was known as the Military, Civic and Fireman’s Parade.
The parade was started before the U.S. even had a Constitution (or a Supreme Court!) The Constitution wasn’t ratified until 1788 and went into effect in 1789 when the Supreme Court was officially born. The Supreme Court was established by Article III but the details were ironed out by Congress in the Judiciary Act of 1789. After it’s enactment, President George Washington appointed the first ever Supreme Court justices:
John Jay (Chief), James Wilson, William Cushing, John Rutledge and James Iredell.
There have been no Supreme Court justices hailing from RI. Get on it, RI!
